Nigeria’s medal hopeful, Lucy Ejike, finished in fourth place, missing out on a podium finish on Friday, September 6, in the women’s 67kg powerlifting event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Ejike’s inability to secure a medal ended her longstanding career streak of winning a medal in every Paralympic event since her debut at the global showpiece in Sydney 2000. Competing in the 44kg weight class at Sydney, she won a silver medal with a lift of 102.5kg.

Since her debut, Ejike has represented Nigeria in six consecutive Paralympic Games, winning a total of three golds, two silvers, and one bronze.

Her participation in the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games marks her seventh appearance but, unfortunately, she missed out on the medal bracket this time.

After the contest, China’s Tan Yujiao lifted 142kg to claim gold, while Egypt’s Fatma Elyan lifted 139kg for silver. Brazil’s Maria Costa took bronze with a lift of 133kg.

Despite Ejike’s result, Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark achieved a significant milestone by winning gold in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Mark’s victory set a new Paralympic record with an extraordinary lift of of 150kg
