Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has expressed his delight to be back in the senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin, respectively.

Okoye, who has been outstanding for Udinese in the just-concluded Serie A season, was named among 22 other players for the big games by Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George.

Recall that since he received an invitation to play in international friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique in October of last year, Okoye has not been called up for national team duty.

However, speaking with the club’s official website after Udinese’s win over Frosinone on Sunday, the Nigerian international stated that it’s always an honours to play for the Super Eagles.

“I am very happy to return to the national team. It is a great honour for me and my family to play for Nigeria. But in the meantime, Alé Udin!”

Okoye also lauded his teammate for securing their Serie A top flight for another season.

He continued, “For the city, for the team. Playing in Serie A is very important for the city and the club. I’m happy; I’m feeling a lot of emotions right now.”

“It was important for us to give a nice permanence, wasn’t it to father Gianpaolo Pozzo. It’s important for me, I can still work on many things.

“I have a great coach, I will definitely improve further in the future.”
