Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asserted that his fate in the 2027 general elections will be determined by members of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He emphasized that it’s too premature to determine whether he will contest the presidency in the upcoming elections.
In an interview with the BBC, Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, hinted at the possibility of his recent meeting with Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signaling potential developments leading up to the 2027 elections.
Atiku’s meetings with political figures like former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, were made the headlines days ago. These discussions, according to Atiku, signify a positive step towards democratic governance and possibly hint at alliances between opposition parties.
Addressing speculations about zoning the PDP’s presidential candidacy to the South East, Atiku expressed willingness to abide by the decision if PDP members reach a consensus on the matter.
While confirming the likelihood of an alliance among opposition parties for the 2027 elections, Atiku refrained from divulging specific details regarding its timing.
Dismissing suggestions of retiring from active politics post-2023, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to political activism, stating, “We fiercely fought even the military governments; let alone the civilian administrations. So, if you’re thinking otherwise, you might be dreaming.”
He clarified that his continued involvement in politics doesn’t hinder the opportunities for new leaders to emerge, affirming his dedication to advancing good governance and democracy.
When questioned about the significance of his recent engagements with political leaders across the nation in relation to the 2027 polls, Atiku emphasized their collective commitment to upholding democracy and improving governance, asserting, “We would never fold our arms watching things deteriorating.”
