A 30-year-old man, Fwangshak Lesun, fell victim to the renewed violence in Daika Community in Panyam District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday after a devastating attack by suspected armed militia.

Our correspondent gathered from eyewitnesses who confirmed the attack in Jos on Monday that Lesun was shot and killed near the Mangu-Daika bridge, just after the cottage hospital on Sunday night.

One of the residents, Mr. Christopher Luka, said, “It was approximately 8:30 pm on Sunday. The young man was just returning to the village but he was ambushed by armed men who shot at him. He died immediately afterwards. The community came together to lay Lesun to rest in Daika on Monday morning. That is the situation now.”

Our correspondent reports that the incident bears a chilling resemblance to the May 2023 Mangu violence, where over 200 civilians lost their lives in attacks by suspected killer herdsmen.

The Plateau State Government had imposed a curfew and vowed to apprehend the perpetrators, but concerns about security and safety persisted.

When contacted, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, was not readily available to comment on the incident as his phone indicated that it was switched off.
