One of Chelsea’s summer signings has been told to leave Stamford Bridge as he’s being ‘wasted’ at the Premier League club.
Chelsea continued their heavy spending last summer, bringing in Tosin Adarabioyo, Estevao Willian, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Filip Jorgensen, Aaron Anselmino, Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Jadon Sancho and Mike Penders.
The likes of Adarabioyo, Neto and Sancho have enjoyed bright starts to their Chelsea careers but others – like Dewsbury-Hall – are struggling to make an impact.
Dewsbury-Hall is yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea since his £30m move from Leicester City last summer.
The 26-year-old was expected to thrive under Maresca – who he played under at the King Power Stadium – but his lack of minutes has led to speculation he could leave after just six months at the club.
New West Ham boss Graham Potter is believed to be interested in signing Dewsbury-Hall and ex-Chelsea winger Pat Nevin insists he should be looking for a new club.
‘It’s a real shame to see what has happened to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and it’s quite strange,’ Nevin told Grosvenor Sport. ‘He is a quality player and hasn’t been able to show that.
‘The problem is that he cannot leave it too long sitting out of first-team football because it’s only a short career and it’s being wasted. I’d love to see him playing more often but who could be dropped at Chelsea?
‘Dewsbury-Hall needs to be playing football, full-stop. If I was him I’d push to go out on loan, whether that be West Ham or somewhere else.’
Dewsbury-Hall made more than 100 appearances for boyhood club Leicester City, helping the Foxes secure their return to the Premier League last season as Championship winners.
He was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year and PFA Team of the Season.
Following his move to west London, Dewsbury-Hall said: ‘It is amazing to be sitting here as a Chelsea player.
‘This is a club people grow up watching and hoping to one day play for, so it is a privilege to be here.’
While Dewsbury-Hall is struggling for game-time under Maresca, the Italian boss has played down rumours the midfielder could be on the move before the January transfer window closes.
‘At this moment Kiernan is our player and for sure, he has a future with us,’ the head coach said in his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup clash with Morecambe.
Asked if a loan exit was a possibility, Maresca bluntly replied: ‘No. Also, because, when you want to send players on loan, it has to be from all the sides; the players, the club and the manager.
‘It is not just about what I want. In this moment there is no plan for Kiernan [to leave].
‘For sure, he has to do that [fight for his place], no doubt. I know Kiernan quite well and he is going to do that.’
