EXCLUSIVE: 3Point0 Labs has followed up recent strategic moves by signing In the Summers co-producer Luz Films.
Headed by Sergio Lira, Lynette Coll and Cristobal Güell, Luz was created with a mission to make Latino-focused prestige and elevated-genre content from diverse creatives and producers in the film and TV space. Its debut film, In the Summers, was a prize winner at Sundance earlier this year.
“Sergio, Lynette, and Cristobal bring such an authentic desire to foster family and community in everything they do,” said Andrew Cutrow, Chief Business Officer and Head of the Entertainment division of 3Point0 Labs. “They bring a vision that is so core to 3Point0’s mission to build communities and infrastructure globally. Luz is a rocket ship and we are so humbled to be a part of their growth as they take off.”
As we revealed at the time, Luz Films launched in January with former A24 exec Lira and Gamechanger Films development chief Coll serving as co-CEOs and ex-Madre partner and Fabula film exec Guell the CFO.
Currently in development at Luz are several feature films and scripted television projects with various Latino creatives from the U.S. and Latin America.
Notably, it co-financed and co-produced In the Summers, which was written and directed by first-time filmmaker Alessandra Lacorazza and stars René Pérez Joglar (aka Residente), Sasha Calle, Lio Mehiel and Leslie Grace.
The indie film won the Grand Jury Prize and Best Director at Sundance Film Festival and yesterday its writer-director Lacorazza signed with UTA, as we reported first. It spans the formative years in the lives of two sisters, watching as they navigate their relationships with their loving but volatile father during their yearly summer visits to his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Luz also has projects in the works with Kristian Mercado (If You Were the Last), Francisca Alegria (The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future), Ryan Zaragoza (Madres), Melina Leon (Song Without a Name), Nathalie Álvarez Mesén (Clara Sola), Lucia Garibaldi (The Sharks), Lindsey Villarreal (La Maquina), Chelsey Lora (Vida), Eva González Szigriszt (Woman in the Book), Marcella Ochoa (Madres) and Maria Corina Ramirez (Bridges).
A further focus is on connecting both debuting and experienced filmmakers with veteran creatives on and off-screen.
For 3Point0 Labs, which former CAA agent and current Francis Ngannou manager Marquel Martin founded, the deal comes after it acquired digital agency Thirty Three Media and launched a talent and literary advisory division with the signing of The Black Book producer Anakle Films.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the 3Point0 Labs family,” said Lira, Coll and Güell in a statement. “Andrew, Marquel, and Carlo [Sebastian Alcala] have been incredible supporters and collaborators of Luz Films since our early inception. Their know-how and vision has allowed us to position ourselves to grow at an exponential rate and continue spearheading the way into a new kind of Hollywood.”
“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Luz Films,” added Martin. “Their dedication to illuminating opportunities for Latin-American storytellers aligns perfectly with our vision here at 3Point0. We believe in their mission to bring together La Familia, and are excited to work together to bring compelling stories to audiences worldwide.”
