As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Monday, commended the resilience of the nation’s citizens and expressed optimism that things would improve soon.
This commendation was made by the leader of the organisation, Reuben Fasoranti, in a statement authorised by the National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, a copy of which was made available to The Punch in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Fasoranti said, “Although the country is going through challenging times, there is a need to acknowledge the modest progress made since we attained independence.
“It is noteworthy that Nigeria remains one country despite the civil war and other internal crises experienced over the last 64 years. This is significant, especially when considering that some countries that gained independence around the same time have split into two or three.”
He further appreciated the fact that the country has enjoyed an unbroken period of civil rule since 1999.
“This is the longest period of sustained democratic governance in Nigeria’s history, and it is worth acknowledging, with the aim of ensuring it continues.
“In this regard, Afenifere calls on all political players at every level to act in ways that ensure Nigerians feel included in the democratic process by implementing policies that prioritise the welfare of the people.”
On the planned rally by some Nigerians to express their concerns over the socio-economic situation in the country on October 1, Fasoranti affirmed that it was the people’s right to do so. However, he urged that the rally be conducted peacefully, without looting, property damage, or harm to anyone.
The Afenifere leader called on the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, to do more in the areas of security, agriculture, education, and the economy, and to increase efforts to ensure that existing infrastructure functions effectively, while also working to provide more.
“State Governments are also urged to do more in infrastructure and service delivery, particularly in areas where there are no constitutional restrictions. Local Governments, now enjoying fiscal autonomy, should also fulfil their responsibilities to significantly improve the welfare of the people,” he advised.
