Timothée Chalamet sings Dylan, and grumps just like him too in the new official trailer for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Charting the West Village era of the great Dylan’s rise to international fame, the clip hits all the high points of the near-mythological story: The arrival from Minnesota, the early romance (Suze Rotolo in real life, here called Sylvie Russo and played by Elle Fanning), the flirtation with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), the run-in with Newport Folkies angered over his gone electric move.

And we get to hear some clips, with Chalamet doing a decent Dylan, at first on the gentle “Girl From The North Country” and then on the rollicking “Like A Rolling Stone.”

The synopsis: “New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide.”

Directed by Mangold, A Complete Unknown is written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, produced by Fred Berger, Alex Heineman, Bob Bookman, Peter Jaysen, Alan Gasmer, Jeff Rosen, Timothée Chalamet & James Mangold.

In addition to Chalamet as Dylan, the film also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, Eriko Hatsune, Big Bill Morgenfield, Will Harrison, and Scoot McNairy

Original motion picture soundtrack forthcoming on Columbia Records

A Complete Unknown from Seachlight Picutures hits theaters December 25, 2024.
