Exchanges between co-commentators Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher often circulate on social media after Manchester and Liverpool matches, and, in recent years, it’s the former Red Devils skipper who’s left looking the most dejected.
Yesterday proved no different, either, after Arne Slot’s first competitive meeting with Erik ten Hag in England culminated with the Merseyside outfit cruising to a 3-0 win.
Luis Diaz’s first-half brace came courtesy of two woeful Casemiro errors, while Mohamed Salah’s goal shortly after the interval extended his feat of scoring in each Od Trafford trip to seven matches.
Neville made to eat his words with unfortunate Mainoo possession loss
In the build-up to the goal, Neville could be heard saying on commentary: “See, [Kobbie] Mainoo now is the deepest-lying midfield player. He’s fine when he receives it in tight areas.”
Then, when Alexis Mac Allister nicked the ball off of the youngster and played in assister Dominik Szoboszlai, the former United skipper reacted: “He was [fine].”
A dejected Neville, like the rest of the Old Trafford faithful, could only put his head in his hands as Salah reeled off to celebrate.
