Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim admits his side’s defeat to Wolves was a setback, but still tried to pick up the positives.

The Red Devils were hoping to bounce back from their back-to-back losses against Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth with a positive result on Boxing Day, but they left the Molineux empty-handed.

Bruno Fernandes was the main culprit, committing two needless challenges that earned him a couple of yellow cards which left his teammates with a man down for almost the entire second half. The home side was quick to pounce on their numerical advantage, as Cunha scored the opener from a direct corner kick, before setting up a last-minute goal for Hwang Hee-chan.

Therefore, Amorim surely wasn’t pleased with the result that left his team in a miserable 14th spot in the Premier League table. He particularly rued the corner-kick goal, as it was the second time they conceded a goal in this fashion in less than week, with Andre Onana imitating Altay Bayindir’s shortcomings against he Spurs.

“Of course, when you lose, when we don’t win, it’s a step back. It was really hard with the sending off. The goal was similar against Tottenham,” said the 39-year-old in his post-match interview via Sky Sports.

“Then, we tried. Even with one less guy we tried to and I think we were near something but then Wolves scored the second one. Then, in the end, we tried everything and the transition was 2-0. For us, let’s continue.

Although he didn’t say it expressly, Amorim implied the opener should have been ruled out, as Matt Doherty and Santiago Bueno stood too close to Onana inside his own area.

“Yes, against Tottenham. It’s the same. Onana cannot go to the ball I think.

“I think he cannot go to the ball. He’s trying to reach the ball and some guys are not even looking at the ball but I don’t want to focus on that. I think the good thing is we were near the goal, even with 10 men. That is a good thing, but we lost.”
