Bafétimbi Gomis has been good wherever he has been in France. The man who is one of the best scorers in the history of French football has announced his retirement at the age of 39.
Bafétimbi Gomis chose the derby between Olympique Lyonnais and AS Saint-Etienne, full of meaning for him, to announce that he was putting an end to his professional career. The former French international (12 caps, 3 goals) chose DAZN and the pre-match between two of the teams whose jersey he wore the most, to formalize his retirement at 39 years old.
Gomis hangs up after a final experience in Japan, under the colors of Kawasaki Frontale, which he joined after a second successful stint at Galatasaray (17 goals in 37 matches). For the French public, “Bafé” Gomis will remain an effective attacker with frankly clean statistics when he played in one of the renowned clubs whose coat of arms he defended:
ASSE – 49 goals in 164 matches OL – 95 goals in 244 matches OM – 21 goals in 34 matchesAnd now ?
As for Ligue 1 alone, Bafétimbi Gomis hangs up with 122 career goals, which makes him the 44th most prolific scorer in the history of the French championship.
The one who celebrated his goals by miming a panther has not yet indicated what his new life would be like. Perhaps he will try to stay in the middle in order to add to his list of achievements which currently only includes a victory in the Coupe de France in 2012 with OL?
