Manchester United are among a host of clubs sizing up a swoop for soon-to-be-free agent Angel Gomes.
Should they reign successful in their pursuit, he’d rejoin the club five years after leaving upon his contract expiry in 2020.
The then-19-year-old, who’d made only 10 first-team appearances at the time of exit, opted against putting pen to paper on fresh terms at Old Trafford in hopes of securing increased game time elsewhere. He enjoyed a successful spell on loan with Portuguese outfit Boavista before returning to Lille for the 2021/2022 term and has since been a regular for the Ligue 1 side.
Now, though, Gomes is looking to swap Stade Pierre-Mauroy for pastures new – or even familiar surroundings in the form of a return to Manchester.
The latest on Gomes’ future

United won’t be alone in their efforts to acquire his signature, either. Tottenham Hotspur are firm admirers of the four-capped England international and are prepared to go head-to-head with Gomes’ suitors when the window opens.
Given no transfer fee is required to try and prise him from Lille, it’ll ultimately come down to which club is making the most lucrative proposal.
Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs shared his understanding of the situation yesterday, saying (via GiveMeSport): “He’s a bit like Jonathan David, who is going to be one of the most hotly-contested transfers because they’re both free transfers. And there’s a lot of value to be had.
“Clubs in the Premier League, in particular, are chasing Gomes, and my expectation is that, one, he moves to the Premier League, and two, there’s a strong likelihood that either Tottenham or Manchester United win the race for his signature.
“With Manchester United, it would be a return, and there’s nothing that advanced – yet they’ve not made the player a formal offer. But we can’t discount Manchester United, who would see value, and United are going to have to find value because their finances are very tight. They’re not advanced at this point, but they might be come summer.”
