Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Major-General Godwin Abbe (retd.), a former military governor of the state.

Abbe, who hailed from Edo State, served as Rivers State’s military governor from August 1990 to January 1992.

His death marks a significant loss to the state and the nation, Governor Fubara said.

The governor’s condolence message was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Port Harcourt by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.

Describing Abbe as a leader who prioritized the welfare of Rivers people during his tenure, Fubara said the late military officer’s contributions to the unity and development of Nigeria were commendable.

The statement read, “On behalf of my family, the Government and the good people of Rivers State, I condole with the family of the Abbes, the Edo people, and the Nigerian military on the demise of this colossus, whose contributions to the unity, peace, and development of the nation are legendary.

“While we mourn his painful exit at this difficult time, we pray for the eternal repose of his soul, and urge the family to take solace in the fact that late Gen. Abbe lived a fulfilled life in the service of his fatherland.”

Fubara further noted that Abbe’s death is a significant loss not only to Rivers State and the Niger Delta but also to Nigeria, given his distinguished careers in the military and public service.
