The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to expedite action on rehabilitating the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road.

The House also unanimously urged the state government to rehabilitate the Olokoro-Amaoba Road to decongest the persistent traffic along the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road pending its total reconstruction by the Federal Government.

The call followed a motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by the member representing the Ikwuano state constituency, Hon. Boniface Isienyi.

In his prayers, Ishienyi urged the House to resolve that the state government be encouraged to rehabilitate the Olokoro-Amaoba road. This road has many economic benefits and would serve as an alternative route to the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, alleviating the suffering commuters who ply the road experience on a daily basis.

He said, “My constituents and that of Umuahia South state constituency who are predominantly farmers experience pain and suffering while conveying their farm products to Umuahia urban city as a result of heavy traffic on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road.

“The rehabilitation of Olokoro-Amaoba road will alleviate the suffering and pain experienced by my constituents, students and staff of higher institutions on the road as well as that of other road users.”

After much contributions and support from other members, the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, called on the federal and state governments to intervene and fix the two roads in question.

He said, “I know that the state has been doing a lot of work on rural roads, I’m very sure that in less than no time they would catch up with the Olokoro Amaoba road. So we call on the Federal Government to expedite action on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road and complete it

and also call the state government to rehabilitate the Olokoro-Amaoba road.”

The continuation and consideration of the report on H.A.B 17: The Abia State Rural Access Roads Agency Bill, 2024, sponsored by the Majority Leader, Hon. Uchenna Okoro, was shifted to a future legislative date.
