The Abia State branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria has announced the suspension of its industrial action, effective immediately.

This is detailed in a press statement dated January 30, 2024, and signed by Prince Chinedu Ezeh (State Chairman) and Chibueze Nwachukwu (State Secretary).

The union attributed its decision to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government and the full payment of all outstanding arrears related to the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage under the CONJUSS Scale for judiciary workers.

“This decision follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JUSUN and the Abia State Government and the full payment of all arrears arising from the late implementation of the new minimum wage in line with the CONJUSS Scale for Judiciary workers, amongst many other issues,” the statement read.

JUSUN commended the state government under Governor Alex Otti for its swift intervention and commitment to the welfare of judiciary workers. “We also appreciate the support and understanding of the general public in the struggle for the emancipation of the judiciary,” the union added.

Expressing gratitude to key stakeholders, JUSUN acknowledged the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, the judiciary management, judges, the Nigerian Bar Association, senior advocates, and all other critical players for their unwavering support during the industrial action.

The union described the suspension as a “significant milestone in our struggle for the financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary,” reaffirming its commitment to a strong, corruption-free judiciary dedicated to delivering justice.

However, JUSUN issued a firm reminder: “We also hope that the other issues agreed upon in the MoU will be implemented accordingly, as this will further strengthen the judiciary and enhance justice delivery in Abia State.”

Recall that courts in the state had remained shut since January 2, 2025, when JUSUN reactivated its previously suspended strike, which initially began in October 2024 before being temporarily halted for the Christmas period.

The strike resumed after negotiations with the government on salary adjustments stalled.

A recent Memorandum of Understanding between the union and the state government paved the way for the suspension of the strike, restoring judicial activities in Abia State.
