Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has requested the establishment of a military operation base in the eastern part of the state to address rising criminal activities.
The governor made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Farooq Mijinyawa, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
Abiodun highlighted that the eastern part of Ogun State, which is experiencing significant commercial growth, including the presence of the state’s airport, has also seen an increase in criminal activities.
He argued that a military base in this region would help manage these issues more effectively.
“The level of commercial activities in the eastern part of the state is increasing, and this is accompanied by a rise in criminal activities,” said Abiodun. “We need a Forward Operation Base there to help us maintain peace and order.”
The governor emphasised the need for a proactive security presence to deter criminals who might migrate from neighboring states.
He praised the Brigade Commander for their prompt response to security issues in various parts of the state, including Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode.
Abiodun expressed concern that negative news about crime could deter potential investors, stressing the importance of visible security measures to maintain a safe environment for economic activities.
He said the state government would provide the necessary support to facilitate the establishment of the military base.
“Having a permanent military presence, especially around the Remo axis, would allow the Army to respond quickly to security challenges,” Abiodun added.
The governor commended the new General Officer Commanding as well-suited for the role and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in their duties.
Mijinyawa expressed gratitude for the governor’s support, particularly in providing welfare for the families of fallen soldiers and logistical support. He assured that the Army would continue its efforts to ensure the state’s security.
“I have instructed my officers and men to intensify their efforts to uphold the peace and security of Ogun State,” Mijinyawa said.
This request for a military base reflects ongoing efforts to enhance security in Ogun State amidst growing commercial activities and associated challenges.
