Ruben Amorim’s players dug deep to seal a crucial win at home to Ipswich Town last night.
Albeit still cemented in the bottom half of the table, Manchester United came from behind to claim all three points on offer against the relegation candidates.
Such a resilient display will bode well for the players ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against the in-form Fulham at Old Trafford, during which they’ll look to advance in their quest to retain the trophy for another season.
It remains to be seen what kind of changes Amorim will make to his starting XI this weekend, but if he knows what’s good for him, he’ll keep the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro in from the off for the visit of the Cottagers.
Fernandes failed to etch his name onto the scoresheet on Wednesday evening but did essentially create all three United goals, given that they all came from his set-pieces. Yoro, on the other hand, made six clearances and one tackle and recorded a 95 per cent passing accuracy throughout his 89 minutes on the turf (Sofascore).
United quartet cherry-picked for praise by MUTV pundit
When analysing the night’s affairs on MUTV, Ben Thornley told the panel: “Sometimes, when you are down to 10 men, you have to rely on and be more decisive with your deliveries. And they were exactly that.
“And then we saw today what we saw against Arsenal when they knocked them out of the cup, defending absolutely brilliantly with substitutions that came up with precisely what you needed.
“Casemiro’s roles – I thought [Noussair] Mazraoui was excellent as well. I thought yet Leny Yoro was worked tirelessly, and the skipper Bruno Fernandes was absolutely outstanding, the amount of work he gets through.”
David May chimed in: “The three centre-halves were great, but also Bruno [Fernandes] and [Manuel] Ugarte in front of them as well.”
