The Arewa Consultative Forum has set up two special committees to propose solutions to the region’s security concerns and other challenges bedevelling the North.

The decision was reached at the meeting of the ACF’s Board of Trustees on September 4, 2024. The committees were inaugurated in Abuja on September 30 and October 1, 2024.

In a statement in Kaduna on Sunday, the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, said the establishment of the committees demonstrates the forum’s commitment to addressing the region’s challenges.

The two committees are the Unity, Peace, and Reconciliation Committee and the Committee on Security.

“The ACF is determined to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing Northern Nigeria. The inauguration of these committees marks a significant step towards achieving this goal,” the ACF spokesman said.

He explained that the Unity, Peace, and Reconciliation Committee is chaired by a former Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, with Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, as deputy.

The committee’s primary objective is to strengthen Northern unity and promote peaceful coexistence among communities.

“We recognize the importance of unity and peace in driving development in the region. Our committee will work tirelessly to propose realistic mechanisms for strengthening Northern unity and reinforcing processes of regular consultations and dialogue,” the spokesperson said.

He added that the Committee on Security, led by a former Chief of Army Staff,  Lt. General Abdulrahman B. Dambazau (retd.), with Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar as deputy, would address the unabating insecurity in the North, according to the statement.

“Insecurity has devastated our communities, and we must find effective solutions. Our committee will engage stakeholders and experts to identify ways to mitigate the security challenges facing the region,” Muhammad-Baba said.

The committees are expected to submit their reports by mid-November 2024. The ACF will then review and discuss the reports with Northern State Governors and submit recommendations to the Federal Government and relevant security agencies.

The ACF emphasized the importance of the two special committees while noting its commitment to the development of Northern Nigeria

“These committees will play a crucial role in addressing the region’s challenges, and we expect their recommendations to be actionable and impactful,” he added.
