The Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has unveiled his reform programmes for the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Nwakuche emphasised teamwork, transparency, and innovation during a strategic meeting with directorate heads in Abuja on Monday.
The Acting CG, in a statement signed by the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, outlined plans to build on existing reforms while introducing new strategies aimed at enhancing inmate rehabilitation, resolving overcrowding in correctional facilities, and improving the welfare of correctional officers.
“The goal is to transform the Service into a model of excellence that prioritises security, reformation, and the reintegration of offenders, which can only be achieved through collaboration, accountability, and the collective dedication of all stakeholders,” Nwakuche said, emphasising the need for collaboration, accountability, and dedication from all stakeholders.
The meeting provided an opportunity for directorate heads to discuss ongoing projects, highlight challenges, and share insights.
They expressed their full support for the Acting CG’s vision and pledged to align their efforts with his leadership goals.
Nwakuche reassured officers of his commitment to fostering a secure and humane correctional system and called for unwavering dedication to duty from all personnel.
President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of Nwakuche as Acting Controller General, effective December 15, 2024.
Nwakuche took over from Haliru Nababa, who officially retired from service on December 13, 2024, after reaching the statutory retirement age.
