Adam Cole has opened up about the impact his injury issues have had on him.
The former NXT Champion was a huge signing when he walked into AEW at All Out 2021. He showed his star power with an amazing main event with MJF at Wembley Stadium in 2023, after a summer teaming with him.
However, injuries on either side of that run kept him out of action for almost his entire run. An ankle injury last year kept him out of action for a whole year, having only just returned from that ordeal.
Adam Cole spoke with Stick To Wrestling to discuss his recent injury troubles in AEW. He talked about how the last two years have been “the most challenging of his career” with concussion and ankle injuries keeping him out of action for nearly two years.
“Truth be told, just to be as transparent as possible—and I think this kind of goes without saying—there have been a ton of ups and downs, both mentally and physically. The past two years have been some of the most challenging of my entire career.
“I had a pretty serious concussion injury that kept me out for an extended period of time. When I came back, I had a six-month run I was really proud of, especially with our first All In event at Wembley Stadium, where I got to open and main event the show. I was flying high and feeling great, and then, of course, a freak injury happened with my ankle.”
Adam Cole Found Injury Mentally And Physically Challenging
Adam Cole continued, explaining the mental and physical anguish he faced recovering from his injury.
“Mentally, it was incredibly discouraging, and physically, it was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. My ankle practically exploded; I had to have two surgeries within seven days, and I now have a cadaver bone, someone else’s bone, in my ankle, along with various screws. The rehab process was tough, as expected. Throughout, I kept thinking, ‘I’ve got to get back.’
“As I started feeling better, both mentally and physically, it began to feel like just yesterday I was in a rehab room, trying to get my ankle to a point where I could even run on a treadmill. And now, I’m getting ready to wrestle on AEW Dynamite tonight. It’s been a journey of ups and downs, but right now, I feel really good, really confident, and really motivated to make tonight a special one.”
