Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has budgeted N19.7bn for the reconstruction of the Jimeta shopping complex in Yola, the state capital.

The Jimeta shopping complex constructed in 1996 was demolished by the present administration on the grounds that the structures were outdated and that the market needed to be expanded to accommodate more businesses.

While briefing journalists on Wednesday after the State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. James IIiya, disclosed that the council approved N19.7 billion for the project.

Illiya added that the contract for the project was awarded to three different contractors with a completion period of 20 months.

Arewa PUNCH recalls that the demolition of the Jimeta shopping complex generated crisis, with members of the opposition All Progressives Congress accussing the governor of political vendetta.

They alleged that the demolition was orchestrated to chase away APC supporters who were strong supporters of Senator Aisha Binnani, the immediate past governorship candidate of the party.

However, the state government clarified that the demolition was done in good fate and that it was part of the plans of the present administration to provide modern structures in the state capital.

The Commissioner of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Dr. Ishaya Dabari, said the new market design would have modern facilities  comprising  shops, fire service, police station, and administrative buildings.
