Celebrated actor Adil Hussain, known for his roles in films like English Vinglish, Life of Pi, Ishqiya, and Lootera, expressed regret over participating in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2019 film, Kabir Singh, where he played a professor. When asked if he would consider a role in Vanga’s film, Animal, Hussain quickly dismissed the idea, stating, “Even if they paid me Rs 100–200 crore, I would never do it.” The 60-year-old actor’s firm stance highlights his disapproval of Vanga’s work.
Hussain also reacted to Vanga’s past comments about his career. Vanga had remarked that Hussain had starred in 30 art films but only had one blockbuster film, referring to Kabir Singh. In response, Hussain highlighted his role in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, stating, “If he is more famous than Ang Lee, I don’t know what to say… Very unfortunate that he thinks like that.” He emphasised that Life of Pi earned over a billion dollars and suggested that Vanga should have considered the significance of the film before making such statements.
Back in April, Vanga had responded to Hussain’s criticism of Kabir Singh via X (formerly Twitter). He suggested that he would “save him from the shame by replacing his face with AI help” and added, “Ur ‘belief’ in 30 art films didn’t get as much fame to u as ur ‘regret’ of 1 BLOCKBUSTER film did.”
Animal, the film in question, features a star-studded cast including Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, along with Anil Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles. It was released on December 1, 2023.
Hussain’s remarks and Vanga’s responses underscore their ongoing tension and differing perspectives on the value and impact of their respective works in the film industry. The exchange highlights the broader debate about the merits of art films versus blockbuster successes.
