EXCLUSIVE: Peacock‘s espionage thriller series PONIES has added five new cast members to its series regular cast: Adrian Lester (Sandman, Day After Tomorrow), Artjom Gilz (Tar, Das Boot), Nicholas Podany (Saturday Night, Hello Tomorrow), Petro Ninovskyi (Shttl, Silence) and Vic Michaelis (Very Important People, Upload).
They join previously announced Emilia Clarke, who also executive produces, and Haley Lu Richardson.
Set in Moscow in 1977, the series follows two PONIES (“persons of no interest” in intelligence speak) who work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. That is until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the pair become CIA operatives. Bea (Clarke) is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Alongside her cohort, Twila, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.
Lester will play “Dane” – Precise and impossible to read, Dane is the head of the CIA Moscow station. His job is secrets, and he has plenty of his own.
Gilz will play “Andrei” – Alluring, with the air of a 70s rock star, Andrei may be the most intimidating and dangerous KGB officer in Moscow.
Podany will play “Ray” – An earnest, midlevel CIA analyst, Ray is equally underestimated by his government and wife.
Ninovskyi will play “Sasha” – A technician for top-secret Soviet technology, Sasha also has a soft spot for romance novels and American culture.
Michaelis will play “Cheryl” – a type-A queen bee of the embassy wives, Cheryl also rules the roost as the office manager. She never misses an opportunity to point out when our heroes make mistakes or remind her doting husband, Ray, that he’s lucky to be with her.
Susanna Fogel (The Flight Attendant, The Spy Who Dumped Me) serves as executive producer, director, and co-writer alongside executive producer and co-writer David Iserson (Mr. Robot, New Girl) and executive producer Mike Daniels (Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, The Village).
PONIES was co-created by Fogel and Iserson. Iserson and Daniels will serve as showrunners. Executive producers are Emilia Clarke and Jessica Rhoades (Black Mirror, Station Eleven) via her Pacesetter Productions. Pacesetter EVP Alison Mo Massey will co-EP alongside Katherine Bridle. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces the series.
Lester is repped by ARG; Gilz by The Artists Partnership and Above the Line; Podany by HCKR Agency & AMT Artists and MZ.MGMT.NY; Ninovskyi by Brett Goldstein Management; Michaelis by Paradigm Agency, Principals Talent, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman.
