Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that midfielder, Thapelo Maseko, is out of Wednesday’s AFCON 2023 semi-finals against Nigeria with a hamstring injury.

Maseko, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, pulled up with a hamstring injury during extra-time in Bafana’s quarter-final win against Cape Verde.

The 20-year-old had played in all of Bafana’s matches at the tournament to date but only started once, which was in the opening day of the group stage against Mali.

“A little update on the injured player Thapelo Maseko – he has a grade three muscle injury, so the tournament is over for him,” confirmed Broos.

“But he stays with us, so he doesn’t go back to South Africa [immediately], and we won’t replace him.”

The Belgian coach added:”There are too many issues with [getting] a visa, a flight, and if we were to replace him, the player would arrive when? Thursday, or worst case maybe Friday?“

Meanwhile, South Africa will be seeking a first-ever win against Nigeria at the AFCON.

The 1996 African champions have lost all three of their past three encounters with the Eagles.
