AFCON: You’ve made us proud, Tinubu, Shettima hail Super Eagles
President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the Super Eagles’ semi-final victory over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
“From the southernmost cape of Africa to the plains of Mauritania and the coast of West Africa, you have made us all Proud to be Nigerians! Go…Soar in the AFCON Finals. Well done, boys!” President Tinubu said in an update on his official Instagram handle Wednesday night.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria advanced to the final of the tournament after beating Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 on penalties.
Nigeria holds the record for the highest number of appearances at the AFCON semi-finals, having played 15 times.
In the line-up against South Africa, the head coach, Jose Peseiro, only made one change in the squad that faced Angola, with Osayi-Samuel replacing Zaidu.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima who was at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, to cheer the team has also extended his felicitations.
In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “Their performance throughout the tournament has been marked by exceptional talent, determination, and resilience, captivating the hearts of fans nationwide.”
As the Super Eagles prepare to replicate their 2013 victory at the finals on Sunday, Shettima said the nation stands united in support, eager to witness them etch their names in football history.
“The entire country awaits their return with bated breath, confident that they will deliver their best performance yet and bring the AFCON trophy home,” he stated.
At the instance of President Tinubu, the Vice President departed Abuja for Abidjan, the Ivorian capital, to lend the President’s support to the Super Eagles.
“Vice President Shettima’s visit to Côte d’Ivoire serves as a powerful call for national unity and support,” said Nkwocha in a statement titled, ‘Vice President Shettima off to Côte d’Ivoire in support of Super Eagles’ AFCON semi-final match.’
