The African Forest Forum (AFF), in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), has launched the
AfricanYouth4Forests (AY4F) Community of Practice to support and equip young professionals, students, and entrepreneurs in Africa’s forestry sector with knowledge and opportunities for growth.
The AY4F Community of Practice will act as a collaborative hub for the members to exchange ideas, share best practices, and develop innovative solutions for forest conservation, climate resilience, and green economy opportunities. Through knowledge-sharing, skill development, and networking, the platform seeks to empower Africa’s youth with the necessary tools and resources to tackle environmental challenges and actively contribute to sustainable forest management.
The live discussions will be held virtually via Howspace from March 31 to April 11, 2025, running from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Nairobi Time (09:00 AM to 11:00 AM GMT). The programme will include interactive chat discussions in the first week and live webinars in the second week to provide a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
Executive Secretary-CEO of AFF, Professor Labode Popoola, stated that understanding the vital role youth play in shaping the future of Africa’s forests and tree resources.
“We recognise the critical role that young people play in shaping the future of Africa’s forests and tree resources.”
Professor Popoola said that by providing a dynamic and inclusive space for engagement, “we are fostering the next generation of forestry leaders and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to drive positive change.”
CEO of KEFRI, Dr. Jane Njuguna, explained the significance of the virtual event, expressing pride in collaborating with AFF and SLU on the AfricanYouth4Forests (AY4F) initiative. She emphasised that this initiative empowers young people to actively engage in environmental stewardship and the sustainable management of forests.
“We are proud to collaborate with AFF and SLU on this African Youth for Forests (AY4F) initiative, which empowers youth to take an active role in environmental stewardship and the sustainable management of our forests.”
The head of SLU Global, Sara Gräslund, underscored the role of youth in sustainable forestry.
Africa’s youth are crucial in rethinking sustainable forest management. There are great opportunities to acknowledge this and work together with young professionals and students who drive climate resilience, unlock green economy opportunities, and shape the future of forests.”
The launch of the AY4F Community of Practice aligns with AFF’s overarching goal of advancing sustainable forest management to preserve Africa’s forests and their vital ecological, social,
and economic contributions. Supported by SLU and KEFRI, the initiative will promote research collaborations, mentorship, networking, and policy discussions to strengthen youth involvement in forestry and environmental governance.
Young leaders, students, educators, activists, scientists, experts, and policymakers in the forestry sector are encouraged to join the AY4F Community of Practice and contribute to shaping a greener, more sustainable Africa.
