Uruguay international Edinson Cavani has criticized the use of video assistance in refereeing.

Boca Juniors striker Edinson Cavani did not hide his bitterness after VAR invalidated a goal he had scored in the draw (0-0) against Talleres last Sunday Primera Division.

Questioned on the video device by the Argentine club’s media, the Uruguayan clearly showed his dismay. “VAR takes away spontaneity from footballjudged El Matador for The Boca Canal on Youtube. Sometimes we see unimaginable things and that’s what makes it rich, its beauty, what awakens this passion and, sometimes, with that, we lose a little of everything that football has always had. »

“I prefer that they make mistakes while being on the ground”

For Cavani, football must retain its human character. “For me, football should be experienced this way. We make mistakes on the pitch with certain gestures. We make mistakes with certain attitudes. We make mistakes while playing. And, when this is the case, we have a coach who can judge us, who can sometimes leave us aside, make a change, put someone else. And if we make an error in attitude, in a gesture on the pitch or a disproportionate blow, we have a referee who judges us, who gives us a yellow card, a red card, rightly or wrongly. But we pay for our mistakes,” he explains.

The former Paris Saint-Germain striker also criticizes the fact that video assistance for refereeing is managed by people who are not on the field. “I’d rather they make a mistake while they’re on the field, in a fast-paced game or in a difficult situation, than behind a computer or sitting in a chair, someone making a decision when they’re not there… And I will also say, in my opinion, we do not really have the technological tools today to take certain measures”added Cavani.
