Manchester United are not giving up their attempts to sign Bayern Munich defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, United stepped up their pursuit on Thursday by lodging a joint bid for the two Bayern Munich defenders.

The proposal was rejected by the Bundesliga giants and they’ve informed United that it will need a higher fee to reach an agreement.

It is understood that Rafaela Pimenta, who represents both players, felt that United’s proposal would be enough to get both deals across the line.

Bayern’s decision to reject the offer has caused bemusement in Pimenta’s camp as a result.

Ornstein claims personal terms for De Ligt and Mazraoui are in place on five-year contracts, which include an option to extend by 12 months.

The reliable journalist reports: “Bayern informed the pair before the summer market opened that neither were part of their plans and transfers should be sought, insisting the club would compromise to help the process.”

United need to dip back into the market for a new centre-back following Leny Yoro’s injury set-back. The 18-year-old has been ruled out for three months with a foot injury he sustained playing against Arsenal on the US pre-season tour.

The potential arrival of Mazraoui could suggest Aaron Wan-Bissaka is egding closer to a move to West Ham.
