The United Nations on Thursday said the rise of artificial intelligence and the rapid growth of digital technologies have introduced new challenges for truth and information integrity.

This was highlighted by the United Nations Information Centre in Nigeria during a high-level briefing on Thursday.

According to the statement issued by UNIC, the virtual event attended by 106 partner organisations, was led by UNIC Director, Ronald Kayanja.

Kayanja emphasised the growing threat posed by misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in an era dominated by digital platforms and AI-driven content.

With AI playing an increasingly central role in content creation and dissemination, Kayanja warned that the risks of misinformation could escalate, undermining public trust and posing significant threats to social cohesion.

He called on governments, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to collaborate in implementing the Global Principles for Information Integrity and the Global Digital Compact, which are key tools in combating these digital-age challenges.

“We will work with partners to address challenges to the integrity of the information ecosystem, implementing the Global Principles for Information Integrity and relevant aspects of the Global Digital Compact.

“It is important to address the dangers caused by mis – and disinformation and hate speech to societies, especially in the wake of AI,” he was quoted saying.

The Executive Director of Mind The Gap Initiative, Tayo Olosunde, advocated for increased use of technology by CSOs to ensure inclusive and more participation of diverse people.

The briefing also focused on UNIC’s broader priorities for 2025, including the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, and the 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals.
