German director Tom Tykwer’s Berlin Film Festival opening film The Light – which touches on the implications of the digital age on humanity – will be released in English in North America using visual translation technology from Flawless.

Flawless announced it had acquired the drama in conjunction with XYZ Films, which is making the film available to U.S. buyers at the EFM.

The acquisition is the result of a partnership with XYZ, first announced in Cannes, under which they co-acquire rights to foreign-language films to convert them to English for distribution in English-speaking territories using Flawless’ TrueSync technology.

Tykwer’s third movie to open the Berlinale, The Light revolves around a middle-class family nearing collapse as it faces an increasingly unstable world.

When a mysterious, Syrian housekeeper enters their lives, the family’s secrets and emotions are brought to light, while the housekeeper’s hidden agenda threatens to reshape their world forever.

The Light is a masterful film by one of the world’s great filmmakers. We could not be more excited to add it to the list of works we have helped reach new audiences,” said Flawless Co-founders and Co-CEOs Scott Mann and Nick Lynes.

“As Flawless further expands its output, we look forward to continuing to work with industry-leading creatives like Tom, revitalizing the global film industry by responsibly implementing game-changing technology.”

Under the deal, with Flawless’ Mann and Lynes, Teashop’s James Harris, and XYZ’s Maxime Cottray take Executive Producers credits on The Light.

The film was produced by X Filme Creative Pool and co-produced by ZDF, Gold Rush Pictures, Gretchenfilm, and B.A. Filmproduktion.

Other films co-acquired for North America by Flawless and XYZ under their partnership include Victor Danell’s Watch The Skies, Stéphan Castang’s Vincent Must Die, Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ibrahim’s Tatami and Smugglers by Ryoo Seung-wan.
