The National Union of Electricity Employees has directed all staff to stay away from work.

This came following Thursday’s attack on its members at the headquarters of Ikeja Electric in Lagos by men of the Nigerian Air Force from the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja.

The union told IKEDC staff to stay at home until further notice because it cannot work under brutality, intimidation, and threat to life.

A statement by the Acting General Secretary of the NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, condemned the invasion of the IKEDC by the military men.

Our correspondent, who was also brutalised by the armed men, reports how they stormed the Ikeja DisCo around 7:40 am on Thursday.

They invaded the headquarters in a military truck and many OP-MESA vehicles.

Journalists and staff were beaten, harassed, and molested during the siege that lasted for over one and a half hours.

Reacting, the union said, it may be forced to withdraw its services nationwide until its members are guaranteed safety and protection at the workplace.

“Consequently, our members are advised to stay out of the office till further notice because we cannot work under brutality, intimidation, and threat to life until the safety of life and properties are assured.

Otherwise, we will have no choice than to withdraw our services nationwide until we are guaranteed safety and protection at the workplace,” the union directed.

The union also said, “The National Union of Electricity Employees strongly condemn unequivocally this dastardly act from the military. We demand an undertaking from the Management, Federal Ministry of Power, and the Defence Ministry to protect our members from any further traumatising attack of this nature. We urge the Defense Ministry to call their men to order.

“We also demand that all staff properties that were taken or destroyed should be replaced and those beaten should be taken to hospital for adequate medical treatment.”
