Al-Hilal, Neymar’s team in the Saudi Pro League, made football history by securing a 28th consecutive victory on Tuesday, with a 2-0 success over Al-Ittihad.
Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal wrote their name in the history books by recording a 28th consecutive victory with a victory over Al-Ittihad in the AFC Champions League. The victory allows Jorge Jesus’ team to record the longest winning streak in football history, breaking the record previously held by Welsh team The New Saints. Neymar has been forced to follow his team from the bench for most of the season, having seen his campaign ended prematurely by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Al-Hilal’s manager downplayed the significance of the record before the match. He told reporters: “ It’s a world record, but it’s not a title. The titles are the championship, the cup and the Asian Champions League. It’s true that the more you win, the closer you get to your goals, and we’re happy about that“.
A record without Neymar
Jesus’ men are now well placed to progress to the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League and are 12 points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League. The loss of Neymar was a blow, but former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been a success, scoring 29 goals in 28 appearances for his new club.
Al-Hilal will continue its march towards the title on Saturday, when it hosts Damac. Jesus’ team will have the opportunity to extend its winning streak to 29 matches.
