Alan Shearer has cast doubt over whether Marcus Rashford will make the England squad for Euro 2024.

The forward has endured a challenging season both on and off the pitch, which has led to criticism of his performances as well as professionalism. Rashford has received plenty of criticism from fans and pundits alike.

However, we must give credit when it’s due because Rashford has scored in his last three consecutive games for United, including an important equaliser in our memorable 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Rashford was called up to the England squad for the March internationals but played just 14 minutes in total against Brazil and Belgium. This will only fuel speculation that Gareth Southgate could snub the forward for the European Championships in Germany this summer.

Adding to the uncertainty that surrounds Rashford’s place in the England squad for Euro 2024, Alan Shearer wrote a column for The Athletic, which states: “If Rashford plays well between now and the end of the season, then that could potentially force the manager’s hand. But I don’t think he’s a certainty to go, no”.

“He’s not a centre-forward, he doesn’t want to play there. He’d be going as a wide forward who can play as a striker in an emergency.

“You can tell from his body language that he doesn’t want to play there for Manchester United. If he’s going to be in the squad, it wouldn’t be ahead of Harry Kane, Watkins or Toney, it’d be as a wide forward”.

The former England and Newcastle striker went on to compare Rashford to Kobbie Mainoo, after the 18-year-old midfielder made his international debut.

Shearer wrote: “Mainoo definitely [played his way into Southgate’s plans], considering that this season he’s been unavailable. What a story, given where he was last summer to where he is now.”
