Alan Shearer says it is a massive decision for Eddie Howe.

After 32 months in the Newcastle United job, will the NUFC Head Coach still be in the job when the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday 17 August against Southampton?

Alan Shearer stating he is ‘certain’ that the FA will be asking Eddie Howe about the England vacancy, if they haven’t already.

Up to Eddie Howe then whether he chooses England or Newcastle United?

Whilst none of us like even thinking about it, Alan Shearer is simply voicing what we are all worrying about as Newcastle United fans.

It would be bizarre if the FA didn’t try for Eddie Howe, as he is clearly the obvious and outstanding candidate to manage England.

Naturally, we all hope Eddie Howe will choose Newcastle United, at least in this point of his career anyway.

Which I think is the key thing here.

Eddie Howe is in the middle of a massive project at Newcastle United and after doing a brilliant job against all the odds at Bournemouth (took them from the brink of dropping into non-league right up to the Premier League and then kept them there for years), he is now at a club where he has the backing to compete at the top end.

At the age of 46, would Eddie Howe really throw away all he has done already at St James’ Park and the dreams he has of what could be to come, to take the England job instead, knowing that so long as he keeps on doing such a stellar job in club management, then every chance of still getting the opportunity in the future to manage the national side.

Alan Shearer talking about the England vacancy to Betfair – 17 July 2024:

“I would imagine the outstanding candidate would be Eddie Howe.

“I think Eddie Howe has a big decision to make because I’m certain the FA will ask him and then whatever happens after that, we don’t know.

“I’m fairly sure that a conversation will have been had or will be ongoing now within the FA where Eddie Howe’s name will get a mention.

“Whether Eddie wants the job or not will be the key.

“The fact we’re talking about Eddie and England again means he’s done a really, really good job at Newcastle.

“He’s been fantastic and it’d be a big blow if he leaves because the fans love him.

“He has done a remarkable job and he understands the club, but I get it and I understand it.

“Whatever he chooses, if he is tempted by the England job, which I suspect he may be, I don’t think many people could or would stand in his way – albeit Newcastle would lose a very talented manager.”
