Newcastle legend Alan Shearer seemed shocked by how much his former club want for sporting director Dan Ashworth, who appears to be on the verge of switching St. James’ Park for Manchester United.
According to The Athletic, Ashworth let his intentions known to Newcastle on Sunday following an approach from Manchester United.
It has long been understood that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford have made Ashworth their No.1 target for the sporting director role at Old Trafford.
However, it sounds like a complication deal to strike with The Telegraph suggesting that will cost United more than £20 million – or be forced to wait until 2026 for Ashworth to begin work.
It sounds like a bit of power play in the media that will be settled as the clubs eventually shake hands on a figure substantially lower.
Shearer has jokingly suggested that it is cheap while reacting to the news on X, formerly known as Twitter.

It is also believed that Ashworth wishes to bring Chelsea chief recruitment analyst Kyle Macaulay to United.
This story is expected to develop over the coming days because United have some negotiating to do with Newcastle, especially if they want to settle on a price for his compensation package.
