EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios has launched development on Razzlekhan, a new film inspired by a 2022 article in the New York Times, which Hannah Marks (Don’t Make Me Go) will direct from her own script.

Pic is based on the true story of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, a millennial couple who stole over $3 billion in cryptocurrency before being caught by the Department of Justice. The film takes its name from the rapper stage name of the latter, who alongside Lichtenstein, was charged by the FBI with conspiracy to launder the stolen bitcoin in February 2022.

Small Victory Productions’ Lili Reinhart and Catherine Hagedorn will produce, under their first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The New York Times’ Caitlin Roper and Sofia Smith are also producing.

Most recently helming an adaptation of John Green’s bestselling novel Turtles All the Way Down to premiere this spring on Max, Marks previously directed John Cho and Mia Isaac in the father-daughter drama Don’t Make Me Go for Prime Video, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival. Other past features from the fast-rising multi-hyphenate, who began her career as an actor, include the Tribeca prizewinner Mark, Mary & Some Other People and After Everything, starring Jeremy Allen White, which bowed out of SXSW. Previously, she also co-wrote and starred in the indie comedy Banana Split featuring Liana Liberato, Dylan Sprouse and more.

Most recently wrapping production opposite Mark Ruffalo on Hal & Harper, an indie limited series from Cha Cha Real Smooth‘s Cooper Raiff, which she also produces, Reinhart was last seen in Netflix’s romantic dramedy Look Both Ways, from director Wanuri Kahiu — a film she also exec produced, which spent three weeks in the Global Top 10 Films (English). Other past screen credits include Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Prime Video’s Chemical Hearts, which she exec produced and led opposite Austin Abrams, and The CW’s Riverdale.

Marks is represented by UTA, Untitled, Circle of Confusion, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman; Reinhart by Anonymous Content, UTA, and Peikoff Mahan Law Office. Anonymous Content handled the deal on behalf of The New York Times.
