'I Would Have Been So Terrifically Mean'

Amber Ruffin is openly criticizing the White House Correspondents Association’s recent decision to cancel her hosting duties at the 2025 WHCA Dinner.

The 46-year-old comedian addressed the situation while appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday (March 31).

“If there’s one thing I learned from this weekend, it’s, you have to be fair to both sides. When bad people do bad things, you have to treat them fairly and respectfully. When you watch The Sound of Music, you have to root for the singing children and the other people. Calling them [Nazis] is so one-sided,” she joked to Seth.

“We have a free press so that we can be nice to Republicans at fancy dinners. That’s what it says in the First Amendment. I thought when people take away your rights, erase your history and deport your friends. You’re supposed to call it out. But I was wrong,” she sarcastically added.

“If they had let me give that speech, oh baby, I would have been so terrifically mean,” she quipped.

On Saturday (March 29), White House Correspondents’ Association president Eugene Daniels announced that Amber would no longer be performing at the April 26 event after members of the White House team reportedly expressed criticism over her upcoming appearance.

The cancellation was reportedly unanimous amongst the WHCA board, and is a part of “re-envisioning of our dinner tradition for this year,” according to Daniels.
