AMC’s A-List Is Getting More Expensive but Giving You More Movies

The price of AMC Stubs A-List is about to go up—but the price per movie is going down. The national theater chain announced that it will be bumping up the monthly price of its subscription-based movie-going service from $24.95 to $27.99 per month for theaters nationwide and from $22.95 to $25.99 for every location other than New York and California, according to an email sent to customers.

In exchange for the price spike, AMC is giving subscribers the ability to see four movies per week, up from three under the cheaper plan. So on a per-movie basis, assuming you maximize your movie-going opportunities, you can actually get more bang for your buck. Of course, if it means sitting through Love Hurts in order to try to squeeze out value, your mileage may vary. (Apologies to Ke Huy Quan. Get your money, king.)

The price change is set to go into effect on May 7, so you have a little bit of time to decide if the extra couple of bucks are a make or break for your budget. AMC also announced that with the change, it will also be allowing moviegoers over the age of 13 can subscribe to Stubs A-List—dropping the minimum age requirement from 16.

Since AMC launched the Stubs A-List in 2018, it’s seen its price increase by over 40% from its initial monthly fee. Though, to the theater chain’s credit, it’s at least tried to add value along the way.

By comparison, Netflix’s premium plan cost $15.99 per month in 2018 (already up from its initial price of $11.99) and just got another bump up to $24.99 with little extra offered to its users other than a whole slew of slop and high-budget flicks with B-movie scripts. And it’s far from the only streamer that has decided to push up prices along the way. On average, Americans pay $61 per month on streaming services, per Deloitte’s 2024 Digital Media Trends Report. By comparison, most households were paying about $30 per month on streaming back in 2018, meaning the cost has more than doubled.

The whole promise of streaming was supposed to be convenience and access at an affordable price. But the price keeps going up and content keeps disappearing. Even with the cost increase coming to AMC’s Stubs A-List, all of a sudden a movie subscription service for an actual theater seems like a pretty good value. At least you won’t get stuck in the endless scroll trying to find something to watch.
