An in addition African country at the 2026 World Cup

Why was there only five African teams at the World Cup so far? For a continent that has provided many talents for decades, the quota of tickets awarded for each edition of the World Cup was clearly unfair. For the 1998 edition, the first at 32 teams, FIFA had only given five sesames to CAF. No selection had hitherto reached the semi-finals, but Morocco in 1986, Nigeria in 1994 and Cameroon in 1990 had all hoisted in the eighth in previous tournaments.

As part of the expansion at 48 participants, for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States and Mexico, the international body has readjusted the target by giving nine direct tickets to Africa, a Confederation which still has 54 members (like UEFA, which has qualified!). Enough to allow the African Confederation to organize much more just qualifiers, by dividing the teams into nine groups, with each qualified winner for the large quadrennial meeting.

While the best nations on the continent fell regularly in dams (Algeria against Cameroon in 2022 for example), Africa should present all its cadors. After six days in the playoffs, favorites are in a position of strength. The account Football raking On X predicts the qualifications of Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon, Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria, Tunisia and Ghana. Only the Nigeria of Admola Lookman and Victor Osimhen missed. The Super Eagles are already dropped by South Africa in group C.

A new country at the World Cup?

A 10th African team will qualify for the North American World Cup according to the projections of Football Rankings. As a reminder, FIFA imagined a large intercontinental dam for March 2026, without European team. Two last tickets will be brought into play. Six teams are drafted, one of each continent but two for the Concacaf (which nevertheless has the three organizers already qualified). New Caledonia is the Oceanian representative. The four less well classified at FIFA will compete before a final against the two heads of the start.

In this little game, and quite logically, the African barragist and that of South America would be the two heads of standard and therefore the last two qualified for the 2026 World Cup. According to Football Rankingsthe DRC will be victorious of the African dam (a final oven between the 4 best 2nd), while Venezuela, current 7th and barragist in the AMSUD zone, will hold its position to the end in order to participate in the intercontinental dam. The Venezuelans could dispute the very first World Cup in their history!
