EXCLUSIVE: Looks like Miles Teller isn’t done playing a Navy officer for Paramount as sources tell Deadline Teller is set to star in a new modern update of the classic Paramount drama An Officer And A Gentleman. Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script. The original draft was written by Matt Johnson. Temple Hill is producing.

The original 1982 pic starred Richard Gere, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr. follows a loner who sets out to finish his Navy Officer training while dealing with a tough as nails drill sergeant while also finding love with a local townie. The film featured star-making performances from Gere and Winger and a scene-stealing performance from Gossett Jr., who would go on to win the Oscar that year for best supporting actor.

The film was a smash hit at the box-office becoming one of the bigger hits of 1982 while also landing seven Oscar nominations and a smash hit song Up Where We Belong, which also took home the Oscar for best song. It would also help turn Gere and Winger two of the biggest movie stars of the decade.

Given the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Co-Presidents of Paramount’s Motion Picture Group, Daria Cercek and Mike Ireland, eyed Teller for the role, expanding the relationship between him and the studio. The 2022 sequel brought in $1.4 billion dollars at the global box-office and a best picture nomination and since then the two parties have been in constant conversations of what that next project could be. The studio had been toying with how to relaunch this IP and brought it to Teller who was intrigued by the idea. Teller recently wrapped production on the Apple Studios event pic The Gorge as his follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick and with this project, his upcoming slate will only continue to diversify in an impressive way.

Teller can be seen next in the Apple Studios tentpole The Gorge, which was directed by Scott Derickson and also stars Anya Taylor-Joy. He also recently wrapped production on the Michael Jackson pic Michael where he plays Jackson’s lawyer John Branca and also has the A24 pic Eternity where he co-stars opposite Elizabeth Olsen.

He is repped by CAA.
