Anambra electoral body promises credible LG poll

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission has assured electorate that the commission would comply with relevant laws and electoral guidelines in conducting the September 28, 2024 local government poll.

The commission’s chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, disclosed this on Thursday, in Awka, the state capital, during an interactive engagement with chairmen of political parties and other stakeholders.

Osakwe insisted that the election would be credible, free and fair, assuring electorate that nobody would be disenfranchised.

She said the commission was consulting with law enforcement agents and community leaders for improved and sustainable security during and after the poll.

She said, “We will ensure a free, fair and credible local government poll. We urged all the political parties to shun campaign of calumny, mobilise their supporters and other electorate to actively participate in the election.

“It is incumbent on the electorate to elect credible leaders for good governance to thrive at the grassroots. We will do things rightly. Do your campaign well. It is going to be free and fair. Go down to your ward.

“Whether rain or shine, election must hold. We don’t have business with political parties. We will go into the troubled areas and conduct elections in those places without a problem.

“We have not been served any paper from court. We are serving the people based on what the law says, and no one will stop us. We are not in a hurry to conduct Local government election. We are following the law, and what others are doing. We are going to follow others accordingly.”

Some of the stakeholders who spoke at the occasion, including the State Chairman of Action Alliance, Norbert Okorie and the President-General, Umunnankwo community, Ogbaru Local Government Area, advocated for improved security of lives and properties in the state and inclusion of stakeholders in the whole electoral processes.

Okorie averred that it seems the election was fixed in a hurry, noting that most of the political parties were not represented at the meeting.

Contributing, the chairman, Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Chukwuka Ezewuzie, urged ANSIEC, political parties and community leaders to give equal opportunities to people living with disabilities during the election, while the Deputy Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Chukwuma Okoye, assured the legislative support to the entire process.
