The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has revealed that the party is using the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State as a test to gauge its popularity and preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abure made this statement in Awka, Anambra State, on Saturday during a forum organised by the party’s Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration.

The event was aimed at giving governorship aspirants the opportunity to meet with delegates ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for next Saturday.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja on Sunday.

At the forum, the only two aspirants of the Labour Party for the Anambra governorship election—Dr. George Moghalu and John Nwosu were in attendance. Abure, who was represented by the party’s national women leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, urged the aspirants to accept the outcome of the primary election and rally behind the eventual candidate to present a united front ahead of the November election.

Abure emphasised the significance of the Anambra election as a crucial step in the party’s journey toward the 2027 general elections.

“We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. The Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are in all the states of Nigeria and Abuja, and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for 2027,” he stated.

He also urged all members of the party to remain united, regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

“After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We will all join hands to emerge victorious in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not bicker, let us all stand strong, be united, and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.”

The forum aimed at bringing the aspirants together to better integrate them with the people they intend to govern.

Abure noted that the party would work towards establishing a strong presence in every polling unit across the state, stressing that the events in Anambra were critical to LP’s success in the 2027 elections.

Following Abure’s speech, the two governorship aspirants addressed party members with their manifestos.

Moghalu emphasised that the major issue in Anambra was the loss of public trust in the government, citing the collapse of security and the use of thugs to enforce taxes. He promised to rebuild Anambra and restore the government’s connection with the electorate.
