Andre Onana dropped from Cameroon’s starting XI for final AFCON group-stage game

Rigobert Song has opted to drop Andre Onana from Cameroon’s starting line-up for this afternoon’s contest against Gambia.

The Indomitable Lions will be hoping for a miracle in their final Africa Cup of Nations group-stage clash; they sit third-placed in Group C and three points behind Guinea in second. Senegal tops the table on six points.

Consequently, Onana could be heading back to Manchester United a lot sooner than he’d have hoped. Should his nation exit the tournament tonight, he could well be named in the starting 11 to take on Newport County in Sunday’s fourth-round FA Cup tie. This would mean Altay Bayindir is still being made to wait for his club debut.

Onana conceded three goals last time out as Cameroon fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of reigning champions Senegal. His performance drew criticism from viewers – something he’s unfortunately grown accustomed to this season.

Given his already tumultuous relationship with Song and the country’s FA, it remains to be seen how the goalkeeper will react to being benched for such a crucial fixture.
