Andre Onana has just started his second season at Manchester United. It was a mixed bag for the Cameroonian and he will be looking to prove why he is regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

United’s first choice keeper has spoken to club media about his excitement to work under a new coaching team this season at United. He also bid farewell to a staff member that he feels benefited him during his first year in Manchester, but now it’s time to work with a new support network.

One of the new rivals includes goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, who joined having previously held the same role under Vincent Kompany at Burnley. He left after Kompany joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

Assistant goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson remains in his role for the new season, so it’s not a complete team of fresh faces for Onana to work with as he looks to perform better than before.

Asked for his thoughts on the changes, Onana said (via ManUtd.com): “Fantastic. So we have a new goalkeeping coach, everything is different.

“Jelle is a fantastic coach, Craig as well, so we have a good team around us and my team-mates as well, we have a great relationship and the way we work is fantastic.”

Always a humble character, the biggest reason I like Onana is how he takes responsibilities. You rarely see him pointing the finger of blame at anyone but himself.

He also sent his best wishes to departing goalkeeper coach Richard Harris, adding: “I want to thank Rich Hartis, who I worked with last season,” Andre said. “We had a great relationship and he helped me a lot with my adaptation in this city, in this country, in this club, so I hope for the best for him and I wish him good luck.”

Onana had some kind words for Tom Heaton, United’s third choice keeper, who helped England’s goalkeepers during Euro 2024 after being invited by Gareth Southgate.

The Cameroon international said: “Tom is my guy, a very good guy. He’s doing his best to help us how he can, Altay and me, because we came last season. It’s fantastic to train with him, to be honest, and we have a very good combination of goalkeepers.

“We have good goalkeeper coaches and I have good colleagues, so it means the gift of God to be here and I’m happy to train with them.”

Onana’s first season at United ended positively because he was part of the team that beat Man City at Wembley in the FA Cup final.

He started the 2024/25 campaign with a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday night. Hopefully the sign of things to come.
