This is so sweet!
Andrew Garfield opened up to Elmo about the loss of his mother in a new video shared by the Sesame Street muppet on Friday. In the clip, the pair sat on the show’s iconic steps. The actor said he was “doing okay” and wondered if Elmo wanted to listen. When Elmo expressed interest, Andrew shared:
“I’m just thinking about my mum today. You know, she passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her. I miss her a lot.”

Elmo replied:
“Elmo’s really sorry to hear that, Mr. Andrew.”
The Tick, Tick… Boom star told Elmo he didn’t need to apologize and then went on to express how it’s “okay to miss somebody,” sharing:
“Sadness is kind of a gift. It’s kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them. And when I miss my mom, I remember all of the cuddles I used to get from her, all the hugs I used to get from her. Just like that, and it makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange way.”
He continued:
“So, I’m happy to have all of the memories of my mum and the joy she brought me, and the joy she brought my brother and my dad and everyone she ever met — everyone around her. So when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So I can celebrate her, and I can miss her at the same time.”
After taking that in, Elmo reflected:
“Wow, Elmo really loves that, Andrew.”
Andrew then revealed “Elmo was my mummy’s favorite” and the muppet gave him a big hug! Aw!!!

Anyone else tearing up?? This is precious and so important for kids to hear!
Andrew’s mom Lynn passed away from pancreatic cancer in late 2019. He’s since channeled his emotions into several meaningful projects, such as his latest film with Florence Pugh, We Live In Time. Love to see him continue to honor his momma while teaching the next generation about this tough topic!
