Andrew Garfield opened up about how he managed the massive fame that came with playing Spider-Man. The 41-year-old actor brought the iconic web-slinging hero to life for the first time in The Amazing Spider-Man. He reprised the role in a sequel and again in 2021′s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Playing the Marvel hero took his star power to another level, which was challenging for him at the time. In a new interview, Andrew explained that he “was really scared” by all of the attention. To counteract it, he made a big change to his appearance. Keep reading to find out more… While on The A24 Podcast with Harris Dickinson, Andrew explained that he was afraid that the fame would sacrifice “the thing that matters, which is the self.” “With all the Spider-Man stuff, I kind of had this allergic response. I was like like, ‘I know I’m not ready for this, in a way. I know I’m not ready for this level of scrutiny,’” he admitted. How did he respond? He said that he decided, “So ‘I’m gonna grow a really horrible beard, and I’m gonna wear really f-cked up clothes, and I’m gonna, I’m gonna chase down paparazzi and try and talk to them.’” He said that he would ask photographers, “Why are you doing this?” Andrew recently admitted that he never expected to land the role. He also revealed if he was interested in playing the character again.
