Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, releases on Netflix this October – and true crime fans are going to love this movie!

Here’s the synopsis from Netflix: “The stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a yearslong murder spree, whose lives intersect when they’re cast on an episode of The Dating Game.”

Inspired by the real life story of Cheryl Bradshaw and infamous serial killer Rodney Alcala, Woman of the Hour takes a headline from the seventies and expands on the narrative as well as how this could help future potential victims in similar situations.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Anna revealed that she’d been attached to the project to produce and star in the film for at least two years, “as often happens with movies, it was just taking forever, and the pieces weren’t coming together. And then, way too quickly, out of nowhere, you have a start date. And in our case, we had a start date and no director.”

Anna went on to say, “The whole two years, I’m sitting there going, ‘Well, if it were my movie, this is how I’d do it. But it’s not, so it’s not my call.’ I just got so excited about the idea of taking this script that I loved so much and shaping it in the way that I saw it.” She eventually signed on to direct!

Anna hopes that if nothing else, the film will highlight the important message on victim blaming, “I was thinking about how even very subtle victim blaming is baked into our culture. Even the most well-meaning people will say things like, ‘Yeah, you really just got to pay attention to those early red flags,’ which is not a nightmare of a thing to say, but man, woof.”

Woman of the Hour is set to release on Netflix on October 18 just in time for spooky season! Leading the cast are Anna Kendrick as Cheryl Bradshaw and Daniel Zovatto as serial killer, Rodney Alcala.
