As Manchester United close in on their first signing of the summer in the form of Joshua Zirkzee, it appears as though the forward additions won’t stop there.
In truth, INEOS probably should be looking at sanctioning another centre-forward acquisition even if Zirkzee’s deal does get over the line.
Rasmus Hojlund is currently the only recognised No.9 in the senior squad following Anthony Martial’s release last month – not that the Frenchman provided much help in his final season at Old Trafford. His injury woes led to Erik ten Hag almost solely relying on Hojlund, at times even turning to utilise Bruno Fernandes in a false nine role.
Now, The Sun claims United are ready to reignite their pursuit of yet another Dutch player who’s been coached by Ten Hag – go figure – in the form of Ajax’s Brian Brobbey.
Ex-Ten Hag protegee is on the back a prolific season
Brobbey, 22, is currently on international duty with the Netherlands at the Euros but is yet to feature in the tournament thus far after five matches played. He’s on the back of a career-best goalscoring season in Eredivisie, netting 18 times and notching a further 10 assists in 30 appearances across 2023/2024.
Arsenal are also said to be interested in acquiring the Dutchman’s services, as they harbour concerns over Gabriel Jesus’ availability following another injury-plagued term. They’re able to offer Brobbey Champions League football, although he may be drawn towards the prospect of reuniting with his former coach at Old Trafford.
Ajax will reportedly demand £30 million to sanction his exit this summer.
