We all watched on this summer, watching Anthony Gordon sitting on the bench watching England play at the Euros as Gareth Southgate only gave him a couple of minutes of action across seven matches.

Not just Newcastle United fans left bewildered.

As England struggled match after match to provide any real viable threat, football fans and those in the media wondering what it was all about, what was Gareth Southgate playing at, all but totally ignoring Anthony Gordon?

With Southgate now thank fully gone, hopefully along with his woeful negative football, Anthony Gordon has now been asked what really went on.

What explanation did Gareth Southgate give for ignoring him game after game as England struggled against six poor to average teams? Then finally outclassed and outplayed by Spain, the first quality team they had faced, Anthony Gordon yet again left on the bench as England were lucky to get away with a 2-1 defeat.

Anthony Gordon speaking to ITV – 6 September 2024:

Interviewer:

“How do you feel about your Euros. You were fit and you were backed by an awful lot of people to have been given more time. So when you reflect on one appearance across the whole tournament, how do you feel?”

Anthony Gordon:

“I was disappointed.

“Just because I believe in myself, I believe in myself so much.

“I feel unstoppable, especially at that point with the season I had just had. I felt like no one could defend [against] me, no one could deal with me over 90 minutes.

“I just felt I was ready to go and really impress people and help the country win the trophy.

“So to envision what I envisioned, to what it was, it was disappointing.”

Interviewer:

“What did the manager [Gareth Southgate] say to you in terms of why you weren’t selected?”

Anthony Gordon:

“Nothing really.

“I didn’t really ask.

“I have said plenty of times, I’m not really that type of guy.

“I just like to get on with it, what I have got to do.

“Like I said, I believed in myself.

“So even from the bench I was thinking, if he (Gareth Southgate) brings me on, I’m going to be ready.

“I’m going to change the game.

“But it didn’t happen.”
