The Anti-Defamation League is getting backlash on social media after issuing a statement about Kanye West‘s anti-semitic rant on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter.

Many users are reminding the ADL of their response to Elon Musk‘s gesture that resembled the Nazi salute at a rally following Donald Trump’s Inauguration.

“It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge,” read the statement posted by the ADL on X on January 20. “In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning.”

The ADL dismissed Musk’s gesture as “awkward” during “a moment of enthusiasm,” which many people took issue with.

After Kanye West’s deplorable antisemitic messages on X, where he claimed he was a Nazi and praised Hitler. The ADL issued a statement condemning the rapper’s posts: “Here we go again. Another egregious display of antisemitism, racism and misogyny from @kanyewest on his X account this morning. Just a few years ago, ADL found that 30 antisemitic incidents nationwide were tied to Kanye’s 2022 antisemitic rants. We condemn this dangerous behavior and need to call it what it is: a flagrant and unequivocal display of hate.”

There is no excuse for the hateful words West put out into the world, and the ADL is correct in condemning him.

However, the ADL’s credibility suffered after not coming out and condemning Musk similarly; instead, the organization asked people to give him the benefit of the doubt. Social media users have taken issue with the ADL and called them out for their “selective outrage.”

“Never forget that the ADL had no problem explaining away Elon Musk’s little sieg heil,” one user said.

“Did yall have the same issue with Elon Musk nazi salute? Or was that okay?” another user posted.

“Only outraged when Kanye does something. Elon literally did a Nazi salute and you guys said, ‘Oh no he didn’t mean it.’ FOH,” read another post.

Although the ADL asked for Musk to get grace amid the salute, in the days after the controversy, the Tesla owner continued making jokes about the Holocaust and appeared at an event for a far-right German political party.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and National Director of the ADL, took to X and said, “We’ve said it hundreds of times before and we will say it again: the Holocaust was a singularly evil event, and it is inappropriate and offensive to make light of it. Elon Musk, the Holocaust is not a joke.”
